5 Tips for Travelling to Malaysia with Children

Which country do you frequently travel to? Malaysia is one of my frequently visited countries. No, not for work, those trips were only for leisure purpose! Why should you consider travelling to Malaysia? First, Malaysia is Singapore's neighbour, getting from Singapore to Malaysia is so easy, it is such a breeze to reach many destinations in Malaysia via air, for example, taking Air Asia flight. Second, there are many places in Malaysia that can meet different types of travel purposes, from shopping in dynamic city areas like Kuala Lumpur, to relaxing by the breathtaking seaside like Redang Island, you have a great variety to choose from, depending on your preference. And last but not least, shopping in Malaysia is never a disappointment, the price is so affordable!

So far, we have brought our children to Malaysia two times. Here are our 5 tips for travelling to Malaysia with children.

Tips #1. Things to do with children in Malaysia

Malaysia offers many more places for families with children. Our children's favourite place in Malaysia is LEGOLAND Malaysia, located in Johor Bahru. Some other theme parks include Sunway Lagoon in Selangor, Sanrio Hello Kitty Town and Thomas Town in Johor Bahru, Melaka Wonderworld in Malacca, Kidzania in Kuala Lumpur, just to name a few.

Fans of science and technology? Petrosains, the Discovery Centre in Kuala Lumpur would ignite the science sparks in you and your children! It is an educational place with hands-on interactive exhibits and science shows.

For families that are interested to be immersed in the art and culture, you should visit Penang. Famous street art at George Town provides many fantastic photo-taking opportunities.

Have little nature lovers? Bring your little ones to Cameron Highlands for the lovely scenery! Before we have children, we visited Cameron Highlands once. It is a beautiful place where we could pick strawberries and visit tea plantation. I am sure the children would like these activities too. Another place for nature lovers that I would recommend is Batu Caves at Kuala Lumpur, it is a spectacular limestone hill. It is said to be around 400 million years old, isn't it amazing?

For sea lovers, islands like Tioman Island and Redang Island on the east coast of Malaysia Peninsular are great for sea sports, or simply chill out by the seaside.  A friend of mine shared with me that another great place is Langkawi. Getting from Singapore to Langkawi takes only 1.5 hour via Air Asia flight, it is a great place for family to have a short getaway.

If you and your children love history, then consider visiting Malacca, which was once a centre of spice trading. Observing the architecture is a great way for the children to appreciate the history of the place.

Tips #2. Getting to Malaysia fast and cheap

Getting to Malaysia from Singapore is very easy. Other than self-driving or taking coaches, another convenient way is to take a flight. Air Asia flight offers many destinations like Kuala Lumpur, Lankawi, Penang and more! You can get the flight tickets at a reasonable rate. Look out for Air Asia airline promotion for more savings!

Tips #3. Shopping for the family

Things in Malaysia are so much cheaper than that in Singapore (oh well, I know this is nothing new to you). After saving much money from taking Air Asia flight, you can now spend more on your shopping spree! One of the giant shopping malls in Malaysia that I visited before is Berjaya Times Square at Kuala Lumpur. It is so huge that it even houses an indoor theme park! Another one is Mid Valley Megamall, in addition to shopping, there is also a cinema. Catching a movie there, again, is so much cheaper (ok, ok, I know this is also nothing new to you)!

Tips #4. Teaching moments on understanding and respecting other's culture

Do share with the children that Muslims are prohibited to eat pork. Therefore, do remind the children that it is considered very rude to use the word "pig" on the Muslims.

Tips #5. Relax and enjoy your trip

Take things slowly! Relax and do not rush!

LEGOLAND Hotel Malaysia Review - 10 Things that Children Love

[Sponsored Review]

"Wow!" The children exclaimed when we reached LEGOLAND Hotel Malaysia.

We reached LEGOLAND Malaysia at 10+ a.m., as the check-in time is 4 p.m., we registered at the reception counter first, and deposited our luggage before we headed to LEGOLAND.

"Wow!" The children exclaimed again when we stepped into our Premium Adventure Themed Room!

What are so "Wow" about LEGOLAND Hotel Malaysia? Here are 10 things that children love about LEGOLAND Hotel Malaysia:

1. Proximity to LEGOLAND Theme Park and Water Park
In some theme park resorts, you have to take a shuttle bus to get from the hotel to the theme park. For LEGOLAND Hotel, it is just 2 minutes walk! It is so convenient!

2. Wall of LEGO Minifigures at reception
Make a guess, how many LEGO Minifigures are there? (Sorry, no prize for guessing correctly!)

The answer is... 12,528!

3. Playgrounds at reception lobby
During check-in (4 p.m.) and check-out (11 a.m.), the children did not have to ask me impatiently "Are you done?" In fact, I had to ask them this question! Why? Because there are castle and pirate ship playgrounds with pools of bricks!

Just outside Bricks Restaurant, there is another play area with soft bricks.

This play area also has Xbox Kinect station. While the children were dancing, we saw some parents join in the fun too!

4. Disco elevator
We were in awe when the door of the elevator opened - were we going into a disco? With disco lightings and the song "Y.M.C.A", the children danced happily!

5. Themed rooms
There are 3 themes: Adventure, Pirate, and Kingdom. The premium themed rooms have more themed features as compared to themed room.

Let us show you the awesomeness of our Premium Adventure Themed Room located at level 6:

The children were delighted that they had their own sleeping area separated by a sliding door. It is great that the children had their own TV, so that DaDi and I didn't have to watch cartoons with them!

The washroom is well designed with the shower area separated by glass panels. And the interesting thing is, there are LEGO creations inside the washroom! Imagine a giant spider crawling while you are showering!

This is the view from our room - we could see LEGOLAND Theme Park and part of LEGOLAND Water Park!

6. Fun in the room
I had a peaceful time showering, because the children were busy hunting - searching for the code to unlock the treasure!

Look at the treasure that they found!

There was also a box of LEGO bricks that kept the children busy.

7. Child-friendly facility
It is thoughtful of the hotel to have a washing basin for children in the washroom.

The children were afraid of darkness at night, we were glad that there were night lights at the children's bunk bed room!

8. Trading of LEGO Minifigures
We managed to trade two at LEGOLAND Theme Park during our last visit, but this time we didn't find any LEGO Model Citizen (a.k.a. LEGOLAND staff) in the theme park. We were delighted to find one at the hotel lobby! Look out for their name tag with "Trade with Me"!

9. Family activities
There are various activities in the hotel.

There was a dance performance when we were there. The performers invited the children to join in the dance, and gave them a special mission - to invite the parents to join in the fun!

Other than performance, there are other activities, such as movie night, competitions like guessing the number of bricks in a bowl and making LEGO creations according to a theme, as well as photo-taking opportunities with LEGO mascots!

10. Breakfast at Bricks Family Restaurant
The children woke up super early before 7 a.m.! And by the time we reached Bricks Restaurant for breakfast before 8 a.m., many families were there already!

The spread of buffet breakfast was decent, including Asian food like porridge and Nasi Lemak, as well as Western food like bread and cereals. There is an outdoor booth that serves omelette, Roti Prata and noodles that are prepared upon your order.

Oh, don't be mistaken, that is not ice-cream factory.... it is porridge station.

LEGOLAND Malaysia Theme Park & Water Park with WTS Travel

[Sponsored Review]

The children are big fans of LEGO, so when I told them that we would be visiting LEGOLAND Malaysia for our second time, they were super thrilled!

Getting from Singapore to LEGOLAND Malaysia with WTS Travel Coach Service

We took MRT to Promenade MRT Station, and walked a few minutes to reach WTS Check-in Counter located at Singapore Flyer.

Don't be surprised when you find that there is no document inside the envelop - the envelop itself is the bus ticket! So make sure you do not lose it! Put on the stickers for the staff to identify you!

This was the coach that brought us to LEGOLAND Malaysia. There was a compartment for travellers to put their large luggage. The seat was comfortable with sufficient space for my legs.

Do take note of the car plate number, so that you will not board the wrong coach after you have cleared Singapore and Malaysia customs!

It took about 1.5 hour to reach LEGOLAND Malaysia. I was glad to take the coach instead of driving, because I could rest and conserve energy for the adventure ahead!

We visited LEGOLAND Malaysia Theme Park with the children last December, and my conclusion is - one day is definitely NOT enough to cover both Theme Park and Water Park when you are going with children! Therefore, if you wish to visit both parks with children, you may consider getting Two-Day Combo Ticket, and have one night stay (Read our review of LEGOLAND Hotel)!

LEGOLAND Malaysia Water Park

As advised by the WTS Travel staff and LEGOLAND staff, we visited Water Park first, because Water Park closes 1 hour before Theme Park.

The changing room with lockers is located at the entrance. There are 2 sizes available - Normal (RM20 / day) and Large (RM30 / day).

We noticed an interesting feature about the lockers - you do not need a key! Just use your fingerprint or a password! I personally prefer using password, so that I can send DaDi to take our belongings while I continue my sun-tanning!

If you like to have a private space to take a rest, you may consider renting a cabana at RM300 for full day or RM180 for half a day from 2 p.m. Each cabana has a mini fridge with some bottled drinks, a safe, a ceiling fan, and some chairs.

Our children are non-swimmers, so I am glad that there are life vests of different sizes available!

Our children enjoyed playing at the smaller slides and building their LEGO boat at DUPLO Splash Safari. Erm, they are actually slightly over-aged for this activity, which is meant for 5 years old and below. The bricks are soft and light, and are suitable for young children.

At LEGO Wave Pool, the children were thrilled when the waves came! Take note that children under 122 cm are advised to wear life vest.

What a big water playground! Joker Soaker  has slides of different length. Look out for the huge bucket of water pouring on to you!

Design your own raft with the big bricks and relax along Build-a-Raft River!

The children enjoyed playing with the water guns at Imagination Station.

Build-a-Boat is a new station set up this year. You can build your LEGO boat and put it to test by racing with other's creations!

Of course, the main attractions of a water park are the slides. However, the children were scared and I was unwell that day, so we did not try the slides ourselves. But looking at the smiling faces of other visitors, we can tell that those slides must be very fun!

LEGO Slides Racers

Splash Out (blue), Twin Chasers (green)

Brick Blaster (red & yellow , 2-4 pax per tube), Splash & Swirl (orange, 1-2 pax per tube)

Red Rush (4-6 pax per tube)

Take note that these are not permitted in the slides - cotton T-shirts, exposed zippers, wet suits, water shoes, or any lose articles that may get damaged during the ride, such as hats or sunglasses.

LEGOLAND Malaysia Theme Park

This is where you would take the "mandatory" photo! We would suggest that you take this photo in the afternoon to avoid the "photobombs"!

We visited the Theme Park after we checked-in LEGOLAND Hotel in late afternoon, and we spent our entire second day there!

Oh, there is something new this year! Starting from 28 September 2015, there is a new staged show at LEGO City Stage - LEGO Ninjago & the Realms of Shadows. This live performance is in Bunraku-style, which is a form of traditional puppet theatre in Japan. It is amazing to see how the performers in black Ninja attire control the LEGO figures seamlessly!

If you are bringing preschoolers to LEGOLAND Malaysia Theme Park, do read our Survival Guide to LEGOLAND Malaysia with Preschoolers!

For older children and adults, what are the activities that are suitable for them?

LEGO Technic - Project X
Minimum size: 110 cm (110-119 cm must be accompanied by an adult)

We can hear the screams from far far away, so do not underestimate the thrill factor!

LEGO Technic - Technic Twister
Minimum size: 110 cm (110-119 cm must be accompanied by an adult)

I would say this is rather mild, because I could still walk in a straight line after I alighted!

LEGO Technic - Aquazone Wave Racers
Minimum size: 100 cm (100-119 cm must be accompanied by an adult)

We were shocked by the the sudden water explosion! Do not stand too near to watch the wave racers unless you want to get wet!

Land of Adventure - Dino Island
Minimum size: 110 cm (110-129 cm must be accompanied by an adult)

Bring along a rain coat! You would definitely get wet! No rain coat? You can buy a poncho from the shop.

LEGO Kingdoms - Dragon's Apprentice / The Dragon
Minimum size: 100 cm (100-119 cm must be accompanied by an adult)

When I showed the children the photos of Dragon Apprentice, which is a smaller-scale version of The Dragon, they said they wanted to try. But when we were at the entrance, they decided to give it a miss. Well, that gives us a reason to go back LEGOLAND Malaysia again.

LEGO Kingdoms - Merlin's Challenge
Minimum size: 100 cm (100-119 cm must be accompanied by an adult)

The ride looked mild, but when we were sitting on it, we kept screaming!

LEGO Kingdoms - The Forestman's Hideout

It was like a maze! The moment the children went in, I couldn't find them!

Getting from LEGOLAND Malaysia to Singapore with WTS Travel Coach Service

We had so much fun, but it was time for us to go home. We walked a few minutes under the sheltered pathway from LEGOLAND Malaysia to the bus stop, where we were greeted by WTS Travel staff. You won't miss them out as there is a signage "WTS Travel" at the bus stop. Remember the envelop a.k.a. bus ticket that I mentioned in the beginning of this post? Pass it to the staff, and wait for him / her to call your name to board the coach.
