DIY Customised Family T-shirt Cupcakes

Time flies, my firstborn is turning 6 in about a month's time. As usual, I would handmade birthday present for her. This year, I decided to make her some T-shirts using Heat Transfer / Iron On method. Instead of folding them nicely and wrap them in wrapping paper, I turned the T-shirts into birthday cupcakes!

Part 1: The Making of Customised T-shirts

First step is to choose a design. You can search for images from Internet, or you can create your own designs. I decided to draw.

Ok, call me an old-school person, I can draw only with a drawing pen and paper, I have not mastered how to draw using tablet. With the help of Canon PIXMA all-in-one printer, together with PIXMA Printing Solution App, scanning my drawing is such a breeze. After editing the images, I printed them on heat transfer sheet using my Canon printer.

Some tips on heat transfer method for T-shirt printing:

• Remember to invert the images (flip horizontal) on editing software e.g. Photoshop, Microsoft Words.
• When ironing the heat transfer paper, place the images facing the T-shirt.
• If you are using steam iron, use the dry mode, do not add water to the iron.
• Place the T-shirt on a table or ironing board, press the iron with the duration specified by the instructions on the heat transfer sheets. 
• If you have difficulty in peeling off the paper, try to use iron to press another 10 seconds.

Yeah, the T-shirts are done!

Part 2: The Making of T-shirt Cupcakes

Using Canon Matte Photo Paper, I printed pattern paper, tags and 3-D stickers from Canon Creative Park.

Then I folded and rolled the T-shirt as shown: 

Next, I cut rectangles from the pattern paper to to make the cupcake linings. Finally, I made the cupcake toppers by pasting the tags and 3-D stickers on toothpicks.

Of course you can use these cupcake toppers on edible cupcakes!

DIY Chinese New Year Hair Accessories

I was interested in making Chinese knots when I was in Primary 3-4. Oh, that was N years ago. And can you believe that I still keep the strings that I bought N years ago?

Since Chinese New Year is approaching, I thought it would be a good opportunity to make use of the strings to make some crafts - DIY Chinese New Year Accessories for Pei Pei!

I borrowed some books on Chinese knots from the library, and after a few failed attempts, I finally managed to make this.

I found some Chinese knot buttons (usually used on Cheongsam / Qipao) from a craft shop at Chinatown. I made this pair of hair clips within a few minutes!

Doorbell Makeover with Washi Tapes

Some locksmiths pasted stickers with their contacts on our doorbell, after we peeled off the stickers, ugly stains were left.

With the help of Pei Pei and Hao Hao, we gave the doorbell press a makeover! As they are not tall enough, their main task was to pass the washi tapes to me.

What a huge difference!

DIY Firefly Lantern Tutorial

It is Mid-autumn festival tomorrow! We had already digested our homemade ice-cram mooncake! Let's not forget another important activity - playing with lantern!

As both children are young, I am not too keen to let them play with lanterns that use candles, because I'm afraid that they would injure themselves if the lanterns accidentally catch fire. 

So we prepared a lantern that does not need candles or batteries - it runs on light stick! 

Materials:

Water bottle

Light stick

Chenille stems (pipe cleaners) x 4 long (for legs and wings) and 1 short (for feelers)

Markers

Scissors

Double-sided tape

White cardboard (optional)

Step 1: Making of the face

There is a logo on the cap of the bottle that we have, so we trace the outline of the cap on the white cardboard, cut it out, use double-sided tape to paste on the cap. Then we use markers to draw the faces of the fireflies!

Step 2: Making of the legs

Wrap a long chenille stem (pipe cleaner) around the bottle, twist it, and bend the two ends to form the legs. Repeat with two more long chenille stems.

Step 3: Making of the wings and feelers

Use a long chenille stem, tie a figure of 8 and secure the ends to the middle legs. Then tie a short chenille stem at the bottle neck, twist it and curl the ends to make the feelers.

Step 4: 

Tie a string around the bottle, and make a loop for it to be held by a stick (we use the balloon stick).

Step 5:

Break the light stick and place it into the bottle.

Princess Hair Accessories Made by MaMi

When Pei Pei was younger, she did not like hair clips, and pulled them away.

As she grows up, she is more concious about her look. She can spend more than 10 minutes in front of the mirror to tie her hair! She even has an aspiration - to have long hair like one her teachers!

She once told MaMi, "I want flower hair clip!" So MaMi learnt to make kanzashi hair clips for her!
