The love for the Broadway musical, The Phantom of the Opera, began when I was a teenager. I was impressed by the enchanting music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, my favourite pieces include The Phantom of the Opera, All I Ask of You, and The Music of the Night. My family also knew those pieces very well since I played the pieces on my piano almost every day back then!
But actually I had not watched the stage performance though it came to Singapore a few times already. So when I was informed that The Phantom of the Opera is back to Singapore this year, I was overjoyed! I am thankful to the kind folks from Base Entertainment for the invitation, and am grateful that DaDi offered to take care of the children so that I could watch the musical with my friend who also loves this musical!
Based on the classic novel Le Fantôme de L’Opéra by Gaston Leroux, The Phantom of the Opera tells the tale of a disfigured musical genius who lives and haunts the Paris Opera House. Mesmerised by the talent and beauty of a young soprano, Christine Daaé, the Phantom lures her as his protégé and falls deeply in love with her. Unfortunately, his obsession sets the scene for a dramatic turn of events when he finds out that Christine is in love with her childhood playmate Raoul Vicomte de Chagny.
Well, what is my verdict of The Phantom of the Opera? I was completely awed by the performance! Let me share with you my 3 reason for loving the musical The Phantom of the Opera:
1. The outstanding cast
With Jonanthan Roxmouth casting as The Phantom, Maghan Picerno as Christine and Matt Leisy as Raoul, the experienced actors and actress bring the characters alive on the stage! The Phantom role is challenging with half of his face masked, yet he is able to show the emotion strongly with his powerful and lustrous voice. The chemistry between Christine and Raoul sparks throughout the entire story, touching my heart.
Though the story tends to be emotional, humour is injected at times, making the show more lively and light-hearted.

2. The enchanting music
The enchanting music pieces are the reasons for me to fall in love with The Phantom of the Opera! While the cast were singing the lovely pieces, I could sing along in my heart! With lovely composed and written songs, beautiful voice of the cast, as well as the awesome live performance of the orchestra, this musical is a fantastic treat to anyone who loves music.

3. The stunning setting and costumes
The breathtaking special effects, detailed backdrops and elaborated costumes are factors that make the musical production special. The scene where The Phantom brought Christine on a gondola ride along a misty river was so picturesque. And there were other special effects that I wondered how they were done, for example, how did The Phantom disappear from the stage suddenly? Ok, I shall not be a spoiler....

It was our privilege to join the backstage tour after the performance! I had an up close and personal encounter with some of the key props in the story - the chandelier, The Phantom's organ and the music box. It was indeed an eye-opening experience!
The number of costumes is amazing! More than 230 of them! We were allowed to carry one of Christine's costume, make a guess how heavy it is ... it is 12 kg! The costumes designed by the late international designer Maria Björnson are really impressive!
An awarding winning and long running theater work, The Phantom of the Opera is perfect for couples and friends date. All I ask of you is to be there to enjoy the music of the night (ok, pun intended).
