8 Crabs Review: Fresh Crabs & Zi Char Delivery

It has been more than a month into the Circuit Breaker measures, and we have been preparing home-cooked meals. So when I told my children about the delivery of crab and zi char from 8 Crabs (八鮮過海), they were very excited! Interestingly, 8 Crabs does not have a physical eatery, other than providing cooked crab and zi char delivery, 8 Crabs is also a wholesale supplier of fresh Sri Lankan live crabs.

As a crab lover, when I browsed through the menu, I couldn't make up my mind which dish I should order - Black Pepper Crab, Chilli Crab or Salted Egg Crab? But I couldn't choose all 3 types as I am the only person in the family who eats crab, and we can't invite my parents or parents-in-law over for the feast due to the Circuit Breaker measure. Perhaps I shall try out the other dishes next time!

We chose the delivery slot to be on a weekday evening between 6 to 7 p.m., at around 6 p.m., I used the online chat function on their website to check the delivery status (as the hungry children were screaming), the friendly customer support officer promptly responded and informed us that our food was on the way. And true enough, our food arrived at our doorstep at around 6.15 p.m.!

The dishes were packed nicely in plastic containers. We could have just taken the food from the containers, however we feel that for such gastronomic treat, we should plate the dishes nicely to enhance our dining experience.

As I was saying that I couldn't decide which crab dish to order, eventually I chose their Award-winning Black Pepper Crab (Large 600-800 grams live, S$68). I was delighted to have the whole crab myself haha! The crab meat is fresh and firm! And it was truly Black Pepper Crab - the amount of black pepper was so generous that made me tear halfway through eating! Most parts of the crab pincers were already cracked, but since we don't have the tool to crack the remaining parts, I could not show you a photo of a perfect piece of pincer. One good thing about eating crab at home is that I do not have to be concern over my "unglam" manner while eating the crab.

The contact person from 8 Crabs shared with us that farmed crabs would produce ammonia as they are stressed in the confined farm environment. 8 Crabs prides itself for providing premium grade Sri Lankan sourced wild crabs, indeed, I did not detect any smell or taste of ammonia from the crab that I ate. She also shared with us that to ensure freshness, these crabs are caught, flown from Sri Lanka to Singapore, prepared and delivered to the customers within 12 hours. 

The aroma of ginger and herbs emerged once the container of Drunken Herb Prawns (Small, S$24) was opened. The prawns are so huge and fresh! I doubted whether we could finish the big tub of soup, but eventually we did not leave a single drop of soup as it was very tasty.

When I placed order for Prawn Paste Chicken (Small S$12), actually I was worried that the chicken wings would become soggy. It turned out that my worry was unnecessary. There was a hole on the lid of the container so that the chicken wings were not soggy upon arriving our house. The prawn paste was not overpowering, which made the dish suitable for my children.

Claypot Beancurd (Small, S$14) is my children's all-time-favourite zi char dish. They kept reminding me to order this dish! As I was busy savouring the crab, the children finished almost the whole dish of Claypot Beancurd, leaving only one piece of beancurd for me.

We ordered two types of fried rice to complete the meal - Yang Zhou Fried Rice (Small, S$6) and Salted Fish Fried Rice (Small, S$6). The portion of two small fried rice was enough to feed our family of 2 adults and 2 children. Both dishes of fried rice have sufficient wok hei - an essential charred aroma for stir-fried dishes. As we are used to food with less oil, it would suit our taste buds better if both fried rice have less oil, and we would appreciate if there are more salted fish and beansprouts in the Salted Fish Fried Rice.
