Sensorium 360° @Singapore Art Museum

Do you know that we have more than five senses? Kinaesthesia, propioception and chronoception... Sound complicated?

Recently we visited Singapore Art Museum to explore our senses at the visual art exhibition called Sensorium 360°.

In the dark room, the art pieces were appreciated through touch.

The children's first encounter with braille.

Run and jump and dance, the children were so excited to see themselves in action a few seconds later!

The exhibition Noon-nom is made up of many cushions. Can you make a guess what the shape represents?

Walking through this maze may be too easy for you.

But it is not as easy when you wear the goggles - you will see from another perspective! It took me a while to orientate myself!

Learning food, taste and culture from Hoi An Chicken Rice.

Listening to music and take a deep breath.

So many types of perfumes, which one to smell first?

We were trapped in a cage!

Mystery touch - what are inside the boxes?

It is interesting to uses scents for discussion with the children.

The children were more interested in playing with this!

Write a few words to indicate that "we were here".

There are activity sheets for Primary, Secondary and Tertiary levels. My children are too young to complete the activity sheets, but these gave me some ideas and possible questions that I could ask and discuss with my children as we explored our senses.

We enjoyed this exhibition. I was glad that I did not have to shout "don't touch" at my children!

The Great Adventure @Changi Airport

[Media Invite]

We embarked on "The Great Adventure" to Brazil, Mauritius, China, and Sri Lanka without bringing along our passports! Yes, you can experience this adventure at Changi Airport Terminal 3 (Departure Check-in Hall Row 11) from now until 28 September 2014!

It is a good learning opportunity for the children (and even adults) to know more about these four places through answering questions in the Exhibition Journey Guide. Simply present a single same-day receipt with a minimum spending of S$10 (or S$20 for supermarkets) from any Changi Airport outlet to redeem one Exhibition Journey Guide. Answer the simple questions and redeem an exclusive gift at the redemption booth (while stock lasts).

The children had great fun with river rafting game in the Amazon Rainforest in Brazil.

This was the first time the children saw Terracotta warriors from China.

Check out Changi Airport's website for more details of "The Great Adventure"!

Let Children Prepare Teachers' Day Gifts

As a full-time-working-parent, I really appreciate the teachers from the childcare centre for taking good care of my children. In the past, I guided my children in preparation of Teachers' Day presents (see our Teachers' Day gifts tutorial). This year, I let the children decide what they give their teachers.

"What is Teachers' Day about?" I asked the children. They thought that it is just another party time in the school. So I discussed with them what the teachers have done for them, and what things they appreciate about their teachers. Through this discussion, I hope they understand that Teachers' Day is about appreciating their teachers.

From our craft supplies cabinet, the children chose the materials to make the gifts. Pei Pei decided to make rainbow loom bracelets and rings, while Hao Hao decided to make cards.

Thank you teachers for your effort, love and care to the children. Happy Teachers' Day! Oh, then we should also thank ourselves too, since we parents are our children's first teachers!

3 Things We Like about Trick Eye Museum + Giveaway

[Media Invite + Giveaway]

When Trick Eye Museum at Sentosa was just opened in June, DaDi and I had a date there (Read this post for our experience). I did miss my children, and thought that it would be fun to have them taking wacky photos with us.

Thanks to the nice folks from Trick Eye Museum, we were back again last week!

3 things we like about Trick Eye Museum:

1. Feel free to touch
As it is a touch museum, we don't need to keep screaming "don't touch" to the children. In fact, we encouraged them to touch, climb, sit and stand on the exhibits!

Oh well, though we were spared from screaming "don't touch", we had to remind the children to make way if they were obstructing other visitors.

2. Family bonding through creativity
While there are posters of examples on how to pose, we didn't tell the children to follow the examples, we just let them use their creativity to interact with the exhibits, and snapped photos without telling them to look into camera.

3. The themes are suitable for family photos
Many exhibits are great for taking photo with a small group of people, the effect of the photos turn out to be very interesting!

Practical tips for families visiting Trick Eye Museum
  • Avoid peak hours - weekdays 12 noon to 6 pm, and weekends. We visited at 10 am on a Saturday, the crowd starts to come in by 11 am.
  • Wear comfortably as you may have to climb on the exhibits or lie on the floor.
  • It may take 1 to 2 hours to take photos, so visit the washroom beforehand as there is no washroom inside the museum.
  • Make sure the children have enough rest and are well fed before the visit, happy children will be more willing to pose.
  • Look out for signs of "Photo Point" on the floor to get the best angle to capture the photo.
  • Don't seek perfection to take the perfect photo. Just relax and enjoy the family time, and be considerate by not hogging an exhibit for too long.

Children Fun Time at Changi Airport Terminal 1

As a student, I went to Changi Airport Terminal 1 to study for my examination. Yes, I was one of those students who hogged the seats at the viewing gallery. As a traveler before I became a parent, I boarded on plane at Changi Airport Terminal 1 most of the time. Oh yes, Terminal 3 was not opened back then.

For some strange reasons, whenever we decided to bring the children to visit the airport as family outing, we would only visit Terminal 3 (See this post for children fun at Terminal 3). How could I forget about my old friend Terminal 1?

We brought our children to Changi Airport Terminal 1 recently. Finally.

To my delight, the indoor playground Canopy Playground located is now FREE! It is located at Viewing Mall at Level 3. Though it is not very big, the children had a great time playing there.

At Viewing Mall, the children were excited by the planes that were taking off or landing.

Up and down like waves, the children were amazed by this kinetic art sculpture called Kinetic Rain. It is located at Departure Hall. Do you know how many rain drops are there?

There are also installations that are great as backgrounds for photo taking.

Changi Aiport is not just a place for travelers, it is also a great place for family outing!

Survival Guide to Alive Museum with Young Children

[Media Invite]

Recently we were invited to Alive Museum, a 3D visual illusion museum located at Suntec City Mall.

Bringing young children along? Here are our survival tips!

1. Visit during non-peak hours.
You may consider visiting the place on weekdays during day time, or weekend mornings, so as to avoid the crowd. We reached there at 10 a.m. on Sunday morning, it was not crowded.

2. Mummies and little girls, please do not wear skirt.
Because there is a room with mirrors all around, and you have to lie on the floor at times.

3. Be sporting and creative.
Do not be shy in posing. No need to follow the suggested poses, just be creative! Instead of telling the children to pose this way or that way, let them decide their own poses.

4. Be considerate.
It is impossible to stop the children from running and climbing. But when they obstruct other visitors, remind them to make way for others.

That was how Marilyn Monroe's shot was taken

5. Some children may be afraid of some images, assure them that those are not real.
Ok, not trying to be a spoiler, there is an exhibit called Powder Room that is located near the exit. Fortunately we sent DaDi to check it out first, he was shocked by it.

6. If the children refuse to be in the photo, don't force them.
It is supposed to be a fun family outing, why turn it into a disappointment?

Our children like some exhibits, especially the one with trampoline, but they don't like some which they called "the scary ones".

I think it is quite a refreshing idea to visit Alive Museum as family outing, especially for families with children who know how to pose, and I feel that the experience would be more wonderful if the lighting is improved.

Singapore Maritime Gallery

During Children's Season this year, I thought it would be fun for the children to visit a museum that we have never visited before, so on a Saturday morning, we visited Singapore Maritime Gallery.

Located at Marina South Pier, it is actually a bit quite out of the place at this moment, the nearest MRT station (Marina South Pier station) will be opened  end of this year. But looking on the bright side, there are not many visitors like some other museums, so the children have much space and freedom to explore.

We reached there at 10 am, it happened that a guided tour was about to start. The friendly tour guide led us to watch a video Our Place in the Sea of Change. Since my children couldn't understand the video, we decided to leave the group and explore on our own.

By the way, don't forget to collect the passport from the reception. The children had fun stamping their passports on their way.

Well, history lessons may not be too interesting to the two young children at this point of time, so they walked past A Cruise through History very quickly, so fast that I couldn't even take a photo of the place!

We then found ourselves in a 20-foot container.

"Wow!" exclaimed Pei Pei when she saw this.

There were also models of many sea vessels.

Suddenly, I saw my two young children transform into Sea Traffic Controllers, as they monitored the Vessel Traffic Information System.

Then next moment, they became ship captains of the Ship Bridge Simulator.

Their vessel almost collided with another one. Oh, I was glad that it was just a simulation.

"Look!" Hao Hao wasn't tall enough to see the sea vessels clearly.

It was really thoughtful of Singapore Maritime Gallery to have little stairs for the children to climb to see the sea vessels through binoculars.

Wow, there are so many types of knots! I think I can only tie a simple knot and a dead knot.

So you were thinking, is that all? How would younger children appreciate this place? Oh, please walk all the way to the end of the gallery, and I would say, the younger children would love this!

Building blocks on the wall! Our children simply loved it! There were interactive games, as well as tables and crayons for the children to draw on their colouring sheets, which could be obtained from the reception.

Wow, isn't it interesting to learn more about Singapore maritime? Hope you have fun at sea!

Milo Cupcakes

Since we bought the oven, I have been thinking of what we should bake next. Our first baking project basic cupcakes was quite successful, so this time, I thought of baking another variety of cupcakes - Milo cupcakes!

Ingredients (make 6 cupcakes):
100g flour (we used plain flour)
2 teaspoons baking powder
2 medium eggs
40g castor sugar
80g butter
2 tablespoons condensed milk
100 ml milk
60g Milo powder (we used 2 sachets of instant Milo powder)

Instruction:
  1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees Celsius
  2. Melt the butter in a sauce pan over low fire. Add sugar, condensed milk, milk and Milo powder. Stir until the sugar and Milo powder are dissolved.
  3. Sift flour and baking powder in a mixing bowl
  4. Beat eggs with a high speed for 1 minute, followed by a slower speed until it turns fluffy
  5. Add the eggs to (2), followed by flour and baking powder
  6. Divide the batter into 8 cupcake cups. Fill to about 70% of the cup.
  7. Bake the cupcakes at 180 degrees Celsius for 20 minutes

Our Milo cupcakes did not look really nice, because I accidentally turned the temperature to 190 degrees Celsius for a while! I think the temperature was too high and caused the cupcakes to "smile" (crack)! Anyway, Hao Hao loved the Milo cupcakes so much that he ate 3 of them!

Perhaps I shall try making Milo cream to decorate the cupcakes next time!

Pancake Art at Home + Homemade Pancake Recipe

Water colour, colour pencils, markers, crayons... we didn't use these for our drawing last weekend. We drew with pancake batter. Yes, pancake batter!

Inspired by this daddy, I thought Pei Pei and Hao Hao may enjoy drawing with pancake batter.

See our not-so-professional drawings, can you make a guess what we drew?

It was quite messy, but we had lots of fun!

Ingredients for pancake:
2 eggs
30 grams butter (melted)
250 ml milk
1/4 cup sugar
1 3/4 cup plain flour
1.5 tablespoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt

Some tips on making fluffy pancakes:
  • Mix the dry ingredients (sugar, flour, baking powder and salt), and separately, mix the wet ingredients (eggs, butter, milk). Then add the wet mixture to the dry mixture.
  • Do not overmix the batter - mix until the ingredients just combine, it is ok to be a bit lumpy.
  • Start cooking as soon as the batter is prepared.
  • Use medium fire to make the pancakes brown.

Ketchup Sachet Submarine - Cartesian Diver Experiment

"It is floating! Now it sinks! And it floats again!" The children exclaimed in excitement.

The cause of excitation? A packet of ketchup sachet in a bottle of water!

How to control the floating and sinking of the ketchup sachet in the bottle of water?

Just press the bottle, the ketchup sachet sinks. Release the bottle, the ketchup sachet floats!

Some tips for conducting this science experiment:
  • Completely fill the bottle with water up to the brim
  • Choose a water bottle that is not too hard to press
  • Before inserting the ketchup sachet, conduct a pre-test: put it in a bowl of water, use the sachet that floats. Oh, we tried using ketchup sachets from different fast food restaurants, only the one that you see in the photo above can float
How does it work?

When you press the bottle, while the water cannot be compressed, the air bubble in the ketchup sachet is compressed. The volume of the ketchup sachet decreases, and hence its density increases (density = mass / volume), and is greater than the density of water, so it sinks!

For Pei Pei and Hao Hao, they are still too young to understand the concept of density, so this experiment was just for them to understand the idea of floating and sinking.

Involving Children in Preparing their Birthday Parties

Birthday is a day to commemorate the mother's effort in giving birth to the child. That's my new perspective about the significance of one's birthday after I delivered two children! So perhaps, instead of saying Happy Birthday to the children, we should also say Happy Birthday to their mother!

Since last year, when Pei Pei turned 5 and Hao Hao turned 4, I transferred to them part of the ownership of preparing their birthday parties in school. The other part? Oh, DaDi and I would still be the one who pay for the birthday cake!

Other than choosing their birthday cakes, they were involved in preparing their birthday party favours - from designing the packaging bags to packing the goodies into the bags.

We bought birthday cake, teacher helped to light up the candles, all children sang birthday song, birthday boy / girl cut cake, everyone ate cake, birthday boy / girl distributed party favours. Oh, does it sound like some SOP (standard operating procedure)?!

For Pei Pei's birthday this year, we decided to do something different. In addition to the SOP (there is no way to skip this procedure), we conducted a craft lesson with Pei Pei's classmates. Well, though I initiated the idea, I sat down with Pei Pei to choose the craft activity together.

No, this is not a one-man woman-show in which I conducted the lesson all by myself. I involved Pei Pei and Hao Hao as the facilitators. Both of them were also in-charge of giving out the materials to the classmates. Before the lesson, I taught Pei Pei how to make the craft at home, so that she could teach her classmates.

Although I have been doing craft activities with Pei Pei and Hao Hao at home many times, it was my first time conducting a craft lesson for a class of 15 Kindergarden children! My initial plan was to get them to sit in groups, however, the high energy children kept coming to me to show me their work or to ask me for assistance, I was surrounded by them!

I was glad that Pei Pei and Hao Hao were great helpers in distributing the materials, and I was really proud of Pei Pei who guided some of her classmates during the craft session!

This is the simple craft that the whole class made together - Flower Cloth Pin!

Materials:
Cloth pin
Washi tape
Origami paper
Double-sided tape
Scissors

Making of the Flower Origami:

  1. Fold the origami paper into half along the diagonal, making a triangle
  2. Fold into half to make a smaller triangle, then open it
  3. Fold both left and right sides as shown
  4. Turn to the back, and fold in the left, right and bottom corners
Making of the Flower Cloth Pin:
Use Washi tape to decorate the cloth pin, then paste the flower origami using double-sided tape. Cut a leaf shape from green origami paper and attach it to the cloth pin using double-sided tape.

Capture Water Fun with Canon PowerShot D30

The children enjoy playing in water, and I love to capture these lovely moments. However, I dare not to risk my smartphone which I use to take photo frequently. I do not hope that my smartphone turning into dumb phone after having a shower.

I was thankful to have the opportunity to loan a Canon PowerShot D30 for our staycation at Resort World Sentosa Festive Hotel.

This photo of Canon PowerShot D30 was taken with my smartphone. The rest of the photos in this post were taken with Canon PowerShot D30.

Canon PowerShot D30 is light to carry.  It is especially important to us parents who need to lug tons of things when we go out.

It is waterproof. Forget about putting it in a zip-lock bag, just relax, and capture lots of water fun moments! It can take photos and videos 25 m underwater, it is definitely a great camera for open water divers!

No worries if your children drop this camera, as it is equipped with 2.0 m shock resistant capability. You can also use this camera at temperature as low as -10 degrees Celsius. It is useful for families on adventure!

Its LCD is enhanced with sunlight mode, so under the bright sunny condition, I could check the photos I had taken without difficulties.

After taking underwater photos, I wanted to use it to take photos above water, how I wished I had a piece of dry cloth to wipe away the water droplets on the lens.

All in all, I think Canon PowerShot D30 is a good camera if you are taking photos underwater.

Disclaimer: I was loaned a unit of Canon PowerShot D30 for one week for trial and review purpose. No monetary compensation was received. All opinions and photos are mine.

10 Things Children Learn Through Cooking

Yes, it is going to be messy with children cooking in the kitchen, but I think it is also a good learning opportunity for them.

1. Mathematics and numeracy
The children learn to use weighing scale, measuring cup and measuring spoon to measure the amount of ingredients. They also learn counting, addition and subtraction.

2. Language and Literacy
From recipe books, the children learn about reading instructions and learn the name of food and methods (e.g. cut, beat, stir)

3. Science
They learn that baking powder and beating eggs cause the cakes to rise, heating chocolate makes it melt, freezing turns liquid into solid.

4. Fine motor skill
Through using the tools, cracking eggs, sifting flour, they develop fine motor skill.

5. Safety
They learn that they should not stand too close to the hot oven / stove, and they should handle cutting / blending tools with care.

6. Teamwork
They learn that they can either take turn, or divide-and-conquer in order to complete the task.

7. Being patient
It is not a magic show, the food take time to be ready. They learn to wait, and understand that things do not happen immediately for them.

8. Being creative
The top of the cupcakes does not look very nice. What can we do? How about using some fruits to decorate them?

9. Being responsible
After creating a mess, the children learn that they are responsible to clean up the mess!

10. Sharing
The food is ready, and is yummy! Not to forget sharing with their family members and friends!

What else do you think children can learn through cooking?
