I was struggling whether we should visit Cingjing Farm 清境農場, because I heard that it is not suitable to visit Cingjing Farm during winter due to the mist. However, I was keen to bring the children to see sheep that are not kept in enclosure! So eventually, I decided to go ahead.
Since we have 4 adults and 2 children, I thought it would be more convenient to hire a private driver, instead of taking bus. If you are keen to take public transport, please read the end of this post for the detail.
Our driver picked us from our hotel in Taichung at 8 a.m. The sky in Taichung looked cloudy, and I was afraid that I made a wrong decision to go to Cingjing Farm. To my surprise, as we were approaching Nantou area, the sky was clear!
It took about 1 hour 40 minutes to reach the area. On the way, our driver dropped us at The Old England Manor 老英格蘭 for photo-taking, he shared with us that a night of accommodation there would cost at least a few hundred Singapore dollars! I don't think my wallet is deep enough to afford this!
After taking the we-have-been-here photos, our driver drove us to 綿羊城堡 of Cingjing Farm, so that we could walk downhill, instead of going uphill. It was very thoughtful of him!
We were amazed by the breathtaking sight!
As I mentioned earlier, the reason why I decided to include Cingjing Farm in our itinerary was to let the children experience the close encounter with the sheep. Well, who knows that our urban children were very scared of the over-friendly sheep! We bought a packet of feed at NT10, our children fed the sheep by throwing the feed on to the ground!
Other than sheep, there were ponies too. You can ride the pony at a fee.
Usually, there are sheep-shearing shows on weekends and public holidays at 9.30 a.m. and 2.30 p.m., however it was a pity that the shepherd went back to his hometown New Zealand for Christmas. There are also daily horse-riding shows at 10.45 a.m. and 3.45 p.m., but we also had to give it a miss as we were too late for the morning show, and would have to visit other places in the afternoon.
After feeding and being scared by the sheep, the children were very hungry. It was just nice that there was a market place with many eatery stalls. We bought some Taiwanese sausages that were said to be made from wild boars, and a sweet pear. Guess how much was the pear? It cost us about S$10! But it was very big, sweet and juicy!
From the market place, you can choose to stay inside Green Green Grassland and walk downhill via 487-Step Trail 步步高升步道. We decided to exit from Green Green Grassland, and walked downhill via Cingjing Skywalk 清境高空觀景步道, which was launched in May 2017. It was indeed the right choice for us, otherwise I think our knees would be hurt!
Our initial plan was to visit Small Swiss Garden 清境小瑞士花園, but it was under renovation. It was close to 2 p.m. when we "conquered" Cingjing Farm Green Green Grassland and Cingjing Skywalk, we were famished by then, so our driver recommended us a restaurant called Talowan 塔洛彎景觀餐廳 for lunch.
The view from the restaurant was quite nice, it was facing Wan-ta Reservoir 霧社水庫. It was turning misty when we were there.
Their signature dish was roasted chicken 甕仔雞. Instead of using knife to cut the chicken, we were provided with a pair of plastic gloves and a pair of thick gloves to tear the chicken. The chicken meat was tender and juicy, and the skin was crispy!
Our driver also recommended us to try the fish - the head and tail were used to make the soup, while the body was steamed.
My favourite dish was sakura shrimps, very crispy and tasty!
The set meal that we ordered also included cabbage, egg omelette and rice. The food there was quite nice, but the washroom was rather dirty.
After lunch, we continued our journey to Puli 埔里.
