Hokkaido Travel: Sapporo Food Guide - What to Eat at Sapporo

During our Hokkaido trip, we spent a few days at Sapporo. We stayed at a hotel near Sapporo Station, where you won't get hungry! Another great place for dining in Sapporo is Susukino area.

What did we eat at Sapporo?

Tokachi Butadon Ippin 十勝豚丼いっぴん @Sapporo Stellar Place (Sapporo Station) level 6

The restaurant is specialised in grilled pork slice bowl. You can choose the amount of rice and pork slice at different price. We ordered the normal size bowls and extra large set meal.

We waited for a while for the pork slices to be charcoal grilled. The amount of fat and lean meat is well-balanced, and the char-grilled pork is very delicious in their special sauce.

We were served by a Japanese lady who was very friendly, she was very thoughtful to provide extra bowls for us to share the food even before we asked for it. Her excellent customer service made the dining experience more wonderful.

Hanamaru Sushi 回転寿司 根室花まる @Sapporo Stellar Place (Sapporo Station)  level 6

Even though there is Hanamaru Sushi in Singapore, the price at Sapporo is lower than that in Singapore (Ok, this is nothing new). However, the queue at Sapporo Stellar Place was extremely long! We waited for almost 45 minutes on a weekday evening!

I ordered some seafood sushi - uni (sea urchin), prawn and crab, they are very fresh and very yummy! Especially the uni, it is sweet and creamy! I totally regretted that I didn't order more sushi after the super long wait!

Kinotoya @Sapporo Station / Pole Town / New Chitose Airport

You won't miss Kinotoya when you walk past the shop, the smell of cheese is very strong! Their signature is baked cheese tart, the crust is crispy and the cheese filling is rich in flavour. This is one of the best cheese tarts that I have ever tried.

In the past, I would go for Cremia soft serve whenever I visited Japan. But now I have found a new love! Soft serve from Kinotoya is very rich in milk flavour. Well, it looks "tall", but actually it is hollow inside.

Ootoya @ESTA (Sapporo Station) level 10

In Japan, there are many restaurants that are specialised in a certain type of dish, so when the family members have different preference, one nice dining place is Ootoya, it offers an array of home-style Japanese dishes.

I tried the beef tongue meal, to my surprise, the beef tongue is chewy and yet not to tough! Very tasty!

Supermarket @ ESTA (Sapporo Station) level B1

The variety of food at supermarket in Japan is amazing. From sushi, bakery to cooked food, one would be delighted to fill the stomach with affordable food from supermarket.

There is a supermarket at ESTA in Sapporo Station, and we went there every night to buy fruits when we were in Sapporo.

The seasonal fruit was melon during our visit in June. Have you heard of Yubari Melon? It is very expensive. We saw 2 slices at 980 yen, and there was 20% off discount in the evening! So we spent almost SGD10 on 2 slices. The melon was really super sweet! It was so sweet that it made the ulcer in my mouth super painful haha!

In case you are wondering how expensive a Yubari melon can be, we spotted one at 15000 yen (SGD180+) at the high-end supermarket at Daimaru at Sapporo Station!

Kitakaro 北菓楼

A famous sweet shop in Hokkaido, Kitakaro is popular among tourists as its products are great as souvenir, and it provides free tasting. The baumkuchen and crackers are delicious.

The outlet at Sapporo is famous not only for its products, it is also well-known for the architecture. I wanted to have tea at the cafe that looked like a library, but it was closed at the time we reached there. What a pity!

I bought the puff  that was filled with generous amount of custard, it was quite nice.

Crepe de Girafe Mobile Shop

We saw an interesting van opposite to ESTA (Sapporo Station). It is actually an eatery that sells crepes!

It offers mainly sweet crepes, and a few options of savory ones. I ordered this one with green tea ice-cream.

There are only a few chairs next to the eatery. Even though it was early summer, it was quite cold to eat there in the evening when the temperature dropped!

Suage+

One of the special dishes in Hokkaido is soup curry. There are many soup curry restaurants in Sapporo, after checking the food review on Tabelog, we decided to visit Suage+. Oh well, you must be thinking, isn't there an outlet in Singapore? We ordered a special dish that Singapore outlet does not have - パリパリ知床鶏と野菜カレー Shiretoko chicken. The chicken meat is very tender, and the soup is very tasty!

We also ordered the vegetable soup curry, all the vegetables are sweet!

The restaurant is located at level 2 of a building, so you have look out for the sign, otherwise you will miss the entrance! We queued for almost 45 minutes on the staircase. Yes, on the staircase! The staircase is very narrow. So if you are bringing elderly and younger children, I would not suggest bringing them there to queue. When we left the restaurant after lunch hour, the queue was still very long and the last few people were actually standing outside the building.

道産食彩 HUG @Tanukikoji 5 Chome

As we walked along Tanukikoji, we saw a local product shop, and next to it was a dining place with a few stalls. We ordered steamed Akkeshi oysters, they were sweet and juicy!

Niikuraya 新倉屋 @Tanukikoji 6 Chome

Our children like dango (rice ball), and we saw this dessert place at Tanukikoji that served dango with different types of paste, for example, red bean and green tea.

Ramen Alley @Susukino

There are a few ramen eateries at Ramen Alley. We visited the eatery Aji no Karyu, where the late Anthony Bourdain visited before.

The signature dish is sweet corn ramen. I ordered one with sweet corns, scallop and crab legs. The seafood seemed to be frozen for long time, so they were not very nice, I should have order the normal sweet corn ramen instead.
