Remembering Mr Lee Kuan Yew's Legacy

Some time ago, as I was reading this book, the children asked me who this man was.

I told them that he was Mr Lee Kuan Yew, who had done a lot for Singapore.

A week ago, we were saddened by the news that he passed on. My initial thought was to bring the children to Parliament House to pay our last respect, but we had to drop the idea as Pei Pei was unwell. We paid our tribute at a community centre instead. 

After writing the first line, Pei Pei asked me, what else she could write. So I asked her, "What are you thanking Mr Lee for?" And she wrote this.

The State Funeral took place this afternoon, it was pouring and it was how many of us felt. We brought the children to bid our last farewell to Mr Lee. When the cortege passed right in front of us, the children waved the national flags and I bowed. Some people cried, some people shouted his name, some people ran across the road to go near to the cortege. I didn't take any photo or video, but I will always remember that emotional moment.

As a parent, one way that I pay my tribute to the late Mr Lee is to pass his legacy to my children - I shall share with the children more about the work he had done when they are older. I hope my children grow up to be Singaporeans with positive learning attitudes and never-give-up spirit, and hope they would be grateful with what they have, not taking things for granted.

The children have been asking us about the late Mr Lee these few days. We found this book A Boy Named Harry - The Childhood of Lee Kuan Yew (by Patrick Yee) in the library. With the illustrations, this book is suitable for the young children to learn about Mr Lee's childhood.
