DIY Labels with Watercolour Pencils

We paste labels on the children's belongings to minimise the chance of mixing up their belongings with other classmates. We also paste labels to organise our stuffs at home. Other than purchasing the customised labels, we made our own creations too.

Materials:
White labels
Watercolour pencils
Small paint brushes
Container for water

Instructions:

1. Draw on the labels using watercolour pencils.

2. Dip the small paint brush into the container of water, press the brush gently at the side of the container to remove excess water. Paint the labels with water.

3. Leave the labels until they are dry.

We like the effect of our DIY labels! One thing to note about this kind of labels is that they are not waterproof, so they cannot be used on things like water bottles.

Marina Barrage Sustainable Singapore Gallery

Some time ago, we visited Marina Barrage to fly kite (read our experience here), but we did not bring the children to explore other parts of Marina Barrage. Until we went there again to catch RSAF Black Knights' aerial display during the Jubilee weekend, then we visited Marina Barrage Sustainable Singapore Gallery, located at level 2 of Marina Barrage.

What a giant structure made by recycled water bottles!

The photos brought us back to the past to learn about the cleaning up of the Singapore and Kallang Rivers.

We were there just in time to listen to a guide who explained how Marina Barrage works. The children were amazed by the giant model of Marina Barrage, they watched what happen when the rain falls and when water builds up behind the barrage, the pumps at work and learnt about the benefits of the dam.

As we were walking around the gallery, we noticed that there was guided tour. If you are interested to learn more, do sign up for their guided tour!

Singapore Botanic Gardens

During the Jubilee weekend, we made a trip to Singapore Botanic Gardens, which has been inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site! It was meaningful to visit there as part of SG50 celebration.

We took MRT and alighted at Botanic Gardens Station (Circle Line), and walked about 1.9 km along Cluny Park Way to reach National Orchid Garden.

The children were tired after for walking some distance, but they were re-charged again when I passed them my camera to take photos of the beautiful orchids.

What were the children looking at? They found some cute ducklings inside the bush!

They also spotted two swans in Swan Lake.

We continued to walk towards Tanglin Gate, just to take a photo with this!

We walked for a total of 3+ km in 1+ hours! I was glad that the weather was not too hot that day, and it was quite a nice stroll in the garden! When the children are older, it would be more interesting to explore the gardens using Singapore Botanic Gardens online trail guides!

Other than National Orchid Garden and Swan Lake, do check out Jacob Ballas Children Garden (with water play area) and Food for Thought (with a small outdoor playground) at Singapore Botanic Gardens too!

Tanjong Pagar Railway Station

"What were they doing? They were planting rice, they were tapping rubber..." As we looked up the main hall, the children were curious about the pictures made up of mosaic tiles.

We were brought back in time when we stepped into Tanjong Pagar Railway Station.

To be honest, I was a little hesitated on whether I should bring the children to Tanjong Pagar Railway Station, because I thought that they would not be able to appreciate the architecture and history. It turned out that I was wrong - the children enjoyed the visit there very much!

The reason? They loved walking along the railway!

Learning Journey: Yakult Factory Tour

As I was doing research on our upcoming Taiwan trip, I found that there are quite a number of educational factory tours in Taiwan. Out of curiosity, I searched for factory tours in Singapore, and found one factory that offers factory tour - Yakult Singapore! It was timely that my nice mummy friend from Evespiration organised the factory tour for a group of us!

When we entered the factory building, we were welcomed by the showcase of Yakult packaging from different countries.

And a panel with information about Yakult.

We went up to a classroom located at level 2. The children were thrilled to see bottles of Yakult on the tables! The bottle of Yakult seemed to taste better, not just because it was fresh, it was also free! (That was the joke made by the staff!)

The staff gave us a presentation on the background of the company and the products. One thing I like about the presentation was that the staff would present based on the type of audience. Our group consisted of mainly preschoolers, so he used the presentation slides that were designed for preschoolers, and showed us an animated video. For students and adults, they have other sets of presentation slides and scientific documentary video.

As the staff was presenting, I was hearted to see that Pei Pei was taking down notes!

We also had an opportunity to see how the Lactobacillus casei strain Shirota (the beneficial bacteria in Yakult) looked like under the microscope. They are the small dots, not the big belly-button-look-alike-particle (milk molecule) at the bottom.

The children also learnt about digestive system during the presentation. Pei Pei was trying to put back the small intestine that she pulled out.

Do you know how unsweetened Yakult taste like? The staff actually suggested that a parent share a small cup with a child. Pei Pei finished the small cup with a big smile, while Hao Hao passed me his small cup, I got to taste the unsweetened Yakult plus his saliva. Then I understood the staff's suggestion - it tasted sour like plain yogurt!

After the presentation, the staff brought us to take a look at various parts of the manufacturing plant through glass-walled viewing gallery. We were informed that photography is not allowed, so that explains the lack of photos of the manufacturing processes in this blog post. Anyway, there is an animation of the manufacturing processes at Yakult's website. I find the animation in the website useful in explaining the processes to the children.

It was amazing to see the big tanks for manufacturing of Yakult. It was also interesting to see how the bottles were moulded and transported upwards through a big pipe. The children were delighted to see bottles of Yakult on the conveyor belt in the packaging station.

At the end of the factory guided tour, we bought some Yakult and Yakult Ace Light® at a discounted price (SGD2.70 and SGD3.50 respectively, as of September 2015)!

Fun facts we learnt from this learning journey:

  • Our small intestine is 6-7 metres long!

  • There are 10 billions (10,000,000,000) good bacteria in a bottle of 100 ml Yakult. (How I wish that number appears on my bank account!)

  • Singapore is the only country that Yakult produces 4 flavours - original, green apple, grape, and orange. Other countries only have original flavour.

  • Yakult bottles are bigger in Singapore, Hong Kong, China and Taiwan, as compared to other counties.

  • The best time to consume Yakult is after meal, not before meal.

Things to note

  1. Yakult factory tour programme will be temporarily suspended on January 2016 until further notice due to plant upgrading, so if you are interested, do sign up soon!
  2. No photography is allowed during the tour around the manufacturing plant. It is a nice reminder for myself to savour the learning moment with my children, instead of busy taking photos.
  3. The glass-walled viewing gallery is quite narrow, and visitors have to walk from level 2 to level 1 down the staircase, so it is not advisable to bring along a stroller.
  4. There is no minimum age stated in the website, personally, I feel that children at 5 years old and above would be able to appreciate this programme better.

Scholastic Sam and Sally + Giveaway

[Sponsored Review + Giveaway]

"Yeah! I found all the items!" Hao Hao exclaimed in excitement as he was working on Scholastic Sam and Sally series.

Designed for children aged 4 to 6 years old, Sam and Sally series from Scholastic enables children to learn new words that are relevant to their everyday life.

One feature I like about this series is that the items that the children have to find are hidden in a meaningful way. This develops the children's visual discrimination skill. The younger children can also develop fine motor skill through colouring.

Another feature that I like is the question posted in each picture for starting a conversation with the children.

It is indeed an interesting approach for children to build their vocabulary bank!

This series is available at all POPULAR Bookstores. To find out more about this series, take a look at their website: www.scholasticsamandsally.com

Book Review + Giveaway: JJ's Science Adventure: Magnets

[Sponsored Review + Giveaway]

We bought some magnets recently, and the children love to play with the magnets. It was timely that we were gifted a science comics book - JJ's Science Adventure: Magnets. Yes, comics! Isn't it interesting to learn science concepts through reading comics?

The children were attracted by the magnetic force of this book!

JJ's Science Adventure is a series of educational science comics books published by Harvest Edutainment. In this title, the twin siblings, Jonathan and Joyce, went on an adventure to World of Magnets, where they learnt about the physical properties of magnets.

3 reasons why we like JJ's Science Adventure: Magnets

Reason #1
The content is aligned to  Ministry of Education Primary School Science syllabus. The key learning objectives are printed in blue bold fonts, so it is easy for us, the parents, to emphasise on the key concepts to the children.

Reason #2
The pages are colourful with interesting illustrations, and the humour used can be appreciated by children. The children were very engaged while I read the comic book with them, and we had a good laugh together while reading.

Reason #3
"Did You Know"section provides real life applications of magnets, this is an important element in developing interest in science, as it helps the children understand the importance and relevance of the scientific concepts that they have learnt. "Challenge Yourself" section is a good way to assess how much the children have learnt.

In addition to reading the comic book, we also had hands-on activity with magnets to enhance the learning experience!

This book is available from Harvest Edutainment. It is also available in the upcoming Popular Fair that is taking place from 3 to 6 September 2015, at Singapore Expo Hall 6B.

Sea Monsters: Past and Present @ S.E.A. Aquarium

[Media Invite]

Hao Hao is very interested in dinosaurs, and he has been borrowing books on dinosaurs from the library. When I told him that we would be visiting Sea Monsters: Past and Present exhibition at S.E.A. Aquarium, he was very excited!

We were greeted by a poster on the wall. What was so special about this? Using SPH Augmented Reality application (iOS or Android), the sea monster came alive! You can even take a photo with the sea monster, just make sure that your head is below the poster.

"Is it dead or alive?" The children asked when they saw this.

Of course it was dead! Else no one would dare to stand next to it! The children learnt that it was called Plesiosaur.

Wow, the jaw of Megalodon was so huge! The children didn't dare to stand near it as they were worried that they would be swallowed by it!

We also saw the fossil of Ichthyosaur.

And then we saw another type of fossil - living fossils! What are living fossils? They are animals or plants that closely resemble species known from fossils.

They don't look like monsters at all! They look quite cute!

We took less than half an hour to walk through this exhibition, and the children were eager to explore S.E.A. Aquarium. We had visited this place 2 years ago, but didn't manage to appreciate the marine life back then (read our parenting lesson at S.E.A. Aquarium). This time, the children enjoyed very much as they have learnt more marine life through reading.

An up-close encounter with the sharks.

The children were tasked to take photos of the marine life.

Do their photos look professional?

That's S.E.A. Aquarium's way of celebrating SG50!

Can you find Nemo?

Nice to see jellyfish in the tank, but not nice to touch them!

Fish swimming beneath our feet!

It was quite crowded when we visited there on Saturday, probably we shall avoid weekends and public holidays when we visit there next time.
