Hong Kong with Children - 5D4N Itinerary & Accommodation (June 2015)

Mission accomplished! We have finally brought the children out of Singapore on plane! The 5 days and 4 nights in Hong Kong in June 2015 was definitely one of the most memorable experiences we have as a family!

In my post on "8 Tips for Planning a Trip to Hong Kong with Children and Seniors", one of the tips is do your homework but do not over-plan. To add on, it is important to be flexible during the trip too! My initial plan included The Peak, Star Ferry and some dining places, however, when the children were tired, we had to cut our plan.

Our 5D4N Itinerary

Day 1
Singapore -> Hong Kong -> Hotel -> Lunch -> Sham Shui Po to buy toys  -> Hotel -> Dinner at Tsim Sha Tsui -> Hotel

Day 2
Hotel -> Dim sum breakfast -> Sai Kung  -> Dinner at Mongkok -> Hotel

Day 3
Hotel -> 3D Museum -> Ocean Park -> Take tram to Central -> Dinner at Yau Ma Tei -> Hotel

Day 4
Hotel -> Disneyland -> Hollywood Hotel

Day 5
Disneyland -> Lunch at Tung Chung -> HK Airport -> Home sweet home

The children enjoyed shopping for toys at Sham Shui Po, Ocean Park and Disneyland, while the adults enjoyed the food (especially the seafood feast at Sai Kung)!

One unique experience for children in Hong Kong is to take a tram ride!

When we were departing from Hong Kong Airport, we bought a postcard from Hong Kong Post, penned down some thoughts on the trip, and sent it home! The children were thrilled to receive their postcard one week after we left Hong Kong!

Accommodation

When we chose our accommodation, the key factor for consideration is proximity to MTR station.

We were introduced to a new hotel called Inn Hotel, located at Yau Ma Tei. The location is strategic - 2 minutes walk to Yau Ma Tei MTR station Exit A1, and there are restaurants, supermarket and convenience store nearby.

Initially, we thought of getting two twin rooms, each with a double bed, for 2 adults and 1 child. After making the request to the hotel staff at check-in, he offered us free upgrade to one triple room! The other twin room, though not next to the triple room, has some sea view! For the price that we paid, it is quite difficult to get any view from a typical hotel in town area. We were really thankful for such arrangement!

The grandparents had the twin room, while 4 of us had the triple room. The rooms are quite small, but we didn't mind, since we spent most of our time outside!

Did not manage to take a photo of 3 beds

In addition, during our visit, the hotel offers free SIM card called i-SIM. This is quite an interesting concept that you just need to download a smartphone application, and keep clicking on the advertisement banners to get free data usage and local call time! The maximum amount is 150 MB data / 150 minutes local call time. I just used the free Wi-Fi provided at the hotel to do the free top up!

Inn Hotel
Address: 60 Portland Street, Yau Ma Tei, Kowloon, Hong Kong

Another hotel that we stayed during our trip was Hollywood Hotel at Disneyland, read our review in our post on "Hong Kong Disneyland Survival Tips with Children" (Tips #14).

    1. Can't really tell which are the best months, but I would say the worst month may be August due to typhoons, and during Chinese New Year when many shops close.

  5. Haha... I was half expecting to see food photos and made sure I read your post AFTER dinner. But no food photos this week! But yeah, the first time I travelled with my baby I super over-planned. Learned my lesson and since then, I always just kept a list of places to visit and played by ear during the trip itself.

    1. I don't know that they may cease the operation of trams, if that happens, HK would lose one unique thing!

    1. Hi, this is tram which is located at the northern side of Hong Kong Island. You may look for hotels in areas like Central, Sheung Wan, Admiralty, Wan Chai and Causeway Bay, there are many hotels in those areas.

  13. Thanks for sharing your learning experiences in your blog. I read yours and many others to plan for my Hong Kong trip during the March holidays in 2016. It's good to know what to expect and have a good enough plan so that when you are travelling with 3 young kids and an elderly, we won't walk too much yuan1 wang4 lu4, otherwise my kids will complain... in fact, I was so inspired by how readily bloggers share their experiences, that I just started my own blog to "give back" to the online community.

    1. Many dim sum restaurants offer good dim sum. We visited Fung Shing Restaurant at Prince Edward, the food is quite nice and the price is reasonable. You may wish to check out our blog post on what to eat in Hong Kong:

  17. Hi! Thanks for sharing your experiences in HK and I am glad I found your blog site, it's very helpful! We will go to HK November this year and I have a 3 yr old toddler with me. From your experience, is it allowed to bring water tumbler and feeding bottles inside the park?

    1. Hi, glad to hear that our blog post is helpful to you. We brought our own water bottles into Disneyland and Ocean Park, there was no problem.

    2. Hi! Thank you for your response. That gives us an idea to bring our own water tumblers and just refill them from the park's water stations.

How do u arrange the nap when they r @amusement park like ocean park?
Can ur children sleep without bolster?

    1. Hi, my children do not take a nap in the afternoon! You may consider renting a stroller from Ocean Park if your children need a nap. My children usually sleep with bolster at home, but they can survive without bolster when we travel.

    1. Hi Priya, the temperature around 30 degrees Celsius in Hong Kong during the month of June, and it rains occasionally. I would suggest to bring along umbrella, caps / hats, small portable electric fan if you are planning outdoors activities.
