As the children are now older, the kitchen is no longer a "forbidden land" to them. I welcome them to join me in preparing simple dishes. Through cooking, they learn about vocabulary, counting, measuring and developing motor skills.
When we were invited to take part in Junior Bake Off by Discovery Kids, I thought it was a good opportunity for the children to learn about the process of baking, since we do not bake at home... we do not have electric oven!
At Chantilly Culinary Studio, the little chefs were given a mission - to prepare Chocolate Rocky Road Burger and Fries Cookies.
As the name "Junior Bake Off" suggested, the baking work should be done by the juniors. From mixing the chocolate with marshmallows, making the dough for the cookies, mixing ingredients for the cupcakes, to assembling the cupcake burgers, the children did most of the work by themselves. MaMi the not so junior (though still young at heart) only assisted in holding the electrical mixer.
Look at their masterpieces!
If Pei Pei and Hao Hao can cook, so can you and your children! Need some inspiration? Catch the pint-sized bakers aged 9 to 12 from across Britain in Junior Bake Off with Discovery Kids channel! Hosted by Aaron Craze, this series of 13 episodes follow the young bakers' journey from the heats to the grand final. Technical knowledge and creativity are the keys to successful bakers! Junior Bake Off premieres every Tuesday at 5 pm, starting 3 June 2014, and encores every Saturday at 1.30 pm and 6.30 pm.
I think I shall purchase an electrical oven soon!

ReplyDeleteThanks Fred! Hope your daughter enjoy this post too!
DeleteI have two toddlers and I always get them to help me out in the kitchen when we do baking. It's good for them to start from an early age and they love to eat things they help to prepare.
ReplyDeleteSalma, it is great that your toddlers start baking from young! This is really a good learning experience for the children!
DeleteThis is such a fantastic idea!
